OS X 10.7 Lion Server Replaces Samba With Windows Networking Tools
The upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Server will remove the formerly bundled open source Samba software and replace it with Apple’s own tools for Windows file sharing and network directory services. The Samba team has moved active development of the project to the more strict GPLv3 license, which prevents Apple from realistically using the software commercially. Due to the licensing restrictions that Apple is encountering, the company has decided to remove Samba, the mechanism OS X uses to connect to Windows file and network directory services, from Mac OS X Lion. The upcoming release of the Lion OS will instead use Apple’s own networking software, according to AppleInsider. The Samba team has moved active development of the project to the more strict GPLv3 license, which prevents Apple from using the software commercially. Developers report that Apple has internally officially announced that it will pull Samba from Mac OS X Lion and Lion Server, and replace it with Windows networking software developed by Apple. Apple’s Windows file sharing software in Lion will reportedly provide most of the same services Samba did but it will not be supporting the NT Domain Controller features that were replaced by Active Directory. The good news is that Apple’s software likely won’t suffer from the issues that Samba had when networking with Windows 7. Does this effect any of you? What do you think of the change in Apple’s upcoming OS? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
