Mimesign is a touchless gesture user interface for the iPad created by the Norway based company Ellipitic Labs. The technology that they’re developing will allow users to control and operate the iPad without having to make any actual contact with the device, much like the Kinect for Xbox 360. MobileMagazine reports that unlike the Kinect which uses cameras to capture the motions of the user, Mimesign is using ultrasound technology to try to accomplish the same effect. The one foot ultrasound field would be generated on either side of the docked iPad, allowing users to move their hands in from front of the screen (Minority Report style) to interact with the UI of the iPad. The company has plans for demoing their prototype this month at CES 2011.

Stian Aldrin, the CEO of Elliptic Labs explains:

“The idea is that you use touch-less gestures to operate primary functions of a docked tablet in situations like when you have wet or greasy hands in the kitchen. In general tablets are made for being hand held. When it is docked you are often walking or standing further away, and then using a finger on the screen involves a change of modality. Rather than bending down, leaning forward or picking it up you can use larger movements a little bit further away to do things like volume up or next song without changing modality.”

Do you think that ultrasound sensory is something that could take off and compete with cameras for motion capture or is it going to have rather limited applications to real world use of devices?
