The much anticipated JailbreakMe 3.0 untethered jailbreak solution for users currently using iOS 4.2.1 may be delayed until further
The email sent by Andrea Cervone from the Italian iPhone blog (iPhone Italia) asked Comex the following:
Just like Steve Job’s ones, I would like to really receive a short and direct answer to my question: your next tool will jailbreak ready for iOS 4.2.1 or the next iOS 4.3?
Comex replied:
Depends when 4.3 is out.
The email address of Comex as shown in the screenshot above seems authentic as he posted the same address publicly in a reply to a user on his Twitter account. This closes the rumors that were previously being spread about the release of the JailbreakMe untethered solution to iOS 4.2.1 being released on December 30th, 2010. The whole response seems to make sense as well because it’s a move that many devs have taken several times before in the never ending cat-and-mouse game with Apple and the iOS jailbreak community.
As of right now, the only way to get an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is to use the latest version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 (which is still in beta) release by the iPhone Dev Team. The latest version is currently Redsn0w 0.9.7b4 which has fixed many issues and removed the need for the usbmuxd process. Redsn0w 0.9.7 also requires you to save SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 saved. If you don’t already have SHSH blobs of 4.2b3 saved and are still able to save them from a previous jailbreak, check out our step-by-step guides on how to save them below:
- [How To] Save SHSH Blobs Directly From iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Using iSHSHit
- TinyUmbrella Updated To 4.21.01; Offers Support For iOS 4.2.1
If you are stuck and can’t save an SHSH blob for iOS 4.2b3, you have the option of using Redsn0w 0.9.6 which can only provide a tethered jailbreak solution on all iOS devices on iOS 4.2.1. The permanent untethered solution soon to be released by Comex (JailbreakMe 3.0) seems like it will be released only after Apple releases iOS 4.3 or 4.2.2 (whichever they decide to go with). There is still some possibility of the greenpois0n jailbreak utility to provide an iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak solution as @p0sixninja (the mastermind behind it) recently tweeted about it’s current status. Time will tell what the devs have planned but you can always stay tuned for the latest jailbreaking and unlocking updates regarding your iOS devices by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feed.
