Verizon recently demoed the new Honeycomb OS running on Motorola’s XOOM. The entire operating system is completely redesigned for use with a tablet which makes it the first tablet optimized Android OS. The Honeycomb UI seems to be extremely refined. Just
Another impressive UI feature of the OS is the new YouTube application. The Motorola XOOM seemed to handle the graphics with a fluidity that hasn’t yet been seen on any current generation tablets, all while focusing heavily on 3D visuals. The videos are presented in a laid out window view, giving users an impressive UI for one of the most popular Android applications. Google Maps 5 was also demoed and the entire application ran incredibly smooth on the tablet. Google Maps 5 on the XOOM seemed to provide a completely new user experience with all the features laid out elegantly all while provided an optimal sized UI on a larger screen.
Honeycomb will be features its own optimized version of Google Books as well. The application seemed to have an iPad like design where one was able to swipe between pages flawlessly. Having all the controls on the software proved to be beneficial when the user was reading a book, as they had all the options to hide all controls making only the text available, allowing no distracting lights or buttons to interrupt reading. In terms of gaming, the device proved to be incredibly fast. Dungeon Defenders was demoed and there no lag or delay in video noticed. All in all, Android 3.0 Honeycomb proved to be very fluid and fast as it was expected to be considering the system requirements are quite high. Tablets using the new Honeycomb OS will definitely prove to be a worthy contender for the iPad if the hardware proves to be sufficient for consumers’ needs.
