As everyone expected, the Xbox Kinect has been a huge success. And of course as with any new gadget, especially with the all the potential of the Kinect, we’re seeing tons of users coming out with all types of cool innovations. The peripheral has even been used to help in surgery and help you with your work-out routine. Microsoft wasn’t too happy with the idea of people hacking their new system at first but now they seem to be quite keen on the idea, probably from all the free media coverage they’re seeing. And now Microsoft is supporting the idea, so much so that they hinted at releasing official drivers and software developer’s kit (SDK) for Windows.

With Microsoft now viewing the Kinect as an open platform, standing behind all the home-brewed uses for the peripheral, the company would more than likely want to see people using their official drivers along with an official SDK. At CES 2011 we saw Steve Ballmer mention that the company was looking into supporting Windows-based PC usage for the Kinect development in the future. The only downside to this announcement was how vague he was with the time frame it would take for us to see official support released to the public. Even though some are still considering this a rumor, the fact that Ballmer brought this up on his own at CES is enough to get us excited at all the possible innovations that we’ll see with the Kinect as it’s only a matter of time before we see official Microsoft-based support for the Kinect on Windows.
