In the ever changing world of technology and gadgets there are my challenges that developers face, one of the bigger challenges is how to make products more streamlined. One product that hasn’t been updated in a while but also probably doesn’t come to mind right away is the average everyday street light. Designer Kisung Lee looks to change the old design with one of his latest concepts. It’s called the Mobius Strip Lamp, and it is meant to make better use of space and consolidate all aspects of traffic signals.

Lee’s design is centered around the idea of an all-in-one lamp. In the design, the traffic signal would sit at the top of a twisted pole. The display of the traffic light would be horizontal with what looks to be LED’s that would display either red, yellow, or green across the entire face of the light. As the light displays the colors it would also display a countdown timer letting the driver know how much time is left until a change of lights is to occur. Next, following the twist and bending of the pole would be a normal street light which would be used to light up a pathway on the cross-walk. And finally on the main vertical section of the pole would be the pedestrian cross-walk signal. The cross-walk signal would alternate between green and red signals to alert pedestrian whether its okay to cross or not. This section would also contain a countdown timer to inform you of how much time you have left to cross.

One possible issue we’re seeing with the design is it seems it would be rather difficult for any one with a visual impairment -such as color blindness- to be able to identify just which signal the light is portraying. But with it still in the design stage there is plenty of time to address any issues. The Mobius Strip Lamp is also a winner of the Red Dot Concept Design award. What do you like about this concept and what design changes would you make for improvements?
