Paul Thurrott, the web-famous Windows watcher has come forward with new details regarding a pair of upcoming updates for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 (WP7) platform. Some of the details seem to be consistent with those mentioned in earlier reports while others are news to many. According to Thurrott, two major updates are due this year to help increase the functionality and fluidity of the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform.

The first, dubbed “NoDo” (short for “No Donuts” – mocking Android’s Donut update, which may have been perceieved as a minor) will be finding its way to users sometime in February. Amongst the features that are included in this update are the “copy and paste functional addition, support for the Qualcomm 7×30 smart phone chipset, a CDMA location stack, and a number of software fixes.” The update will RTM in January, possibly even this week in time for Microsoft’s 2011 CES keynote. It won’t be shipping to users until early February though, until carriers sign off on it.

Later in the year, another update is being rumored to release internally called “Mango.” The update is said to bring “Internet Explorer 9 with with the Trident 5 rendering engine, HTML 5 and Silverlight, and gesture support.” Mango may also include some new entertainment features which currently no one has released more info on just yet. This update is currently known as Windows Phone 7.2 as of right now.

Seems like Microsoft is hard at work in trying to appeal to the mobile market to ensure the success of their new OS. So far their platform seems to have exceeded their own expectations and seems to be headed int he right direction. The OS still has some glaring weaknesses such as the app DRM issues but Microsoft is working to resolve the issue to continue to attract developers as well as new customers. It is succeeding so far as well, as the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace recently achieved its 5,000 app milestone. Do you own a Windows Phone 7 phone? If so what do you think of it?
