Apple’s Mac App Store Faces Piracy

It seems to be problem after problem after the opening of Apple’s Mac App Store as the company continues onwards toward what seems to be it’s plan to treat desktop software like iOS apps. After the installation issues that were widely reported yesterday, it now looks like poor software validation is opening the door to piracy. Apple has guidelines for validating Mac App Store receipts, but it turns out that some apps don’t entirely follow these guidelines so some paid apps such as Angry Birds, can be bootlegged with a receipt from a free download.

This problem appears to be that affected apps are checking valid receipts but afterwards are failing to check to see if the bundle ID for the receipt matches their own bundle ID. Even with this being a relatively big issue, its likely to be quickly and easily resolved. It could be expected that Apple will be adding an extra check to their validation process to make sure developers haven’t left themselves open to piracy. Do you think that this security breach will encourage more attempts of piracy or is it more of a one and done type of situation for Apple?
