Intel is dropping us some good news and bad at the same time. The highly anticipated Light Peak interconnect is ready for implementation according to them but its present iteration is based on communications over old copper wire instead of fiber optics. David Perlmutter from Intel said that the transmissions over copper turned out to be “surprisingly better” than expected and that it’ll prove plentiful for the majority of user needs today.
Although that may be true, its not what we needthat stays on our mind, its what is to come that keeps many up at night, such as the thought of dual-core smartphones and tablet-optimized Androids. That being said, that doesn’t mean that Intel isn’t working on a fiber optic connection, which would provide a 10Gbps optical option, it’s just going to take longer for it to be implemented in the gadgets we use.
