At CES 2o11 we saw every kind of gadget imaginable designed for the business world, but what about the fun side of technology? Sifteo is one of the few new tech toys trying to bring the focus of fun back to technology. The company has created a game system in which small cubes have displays and wireless connectivity. The cubes are sensitive to touch, movement and they interact with each other when you put them near each other.
“Traditional game consoles have lost the tangible and interactive nature of classic tabletop games like MCo-founders David Merrill and Jeevan Kalanithi first came up with the prototype for the cubes when studying human-computer interaction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. Mah Jong and Dominoes, that bring people together,” said Kalanithi. While studying human behavior, they realized that people tend to interact with objects by picking them up and arranging them in order based on personal guidelines. When using Sifteo cubes, the players install software (Windows or Mac) which connects them to the web where they can buy games and apps from Sifteo’s online library. A wireless USB link enables the downloaded games and apps to be sent to the cubes for play, these can be used up to 20 feet away. The company is planning on releasing the cube system for $149, but will drop the price to $99 for early buyers.
