Sony Ericcson’s PlayStation phone has been caught in action online again, this time showing the XPERIA Play branded handset running a PlayStation 1 (PS1) emulator playing Resident Evil 2 and Ridge Racer. The clip was originally spotted by Edge Magazine, shows the currently unannounced smartphone loading an app called ROM Buddy and then playing titles from Sony’s original PlayStation console. At this stage, it’s unclear whether it’s functionality the shipping version of the XPERIA Play will actually support. Reports from before from Chinese sites that acquired a PlayStation Phone prototype suggested they had been able to run a ROM emulator with some degree of success and this particular prototype is doing just that. Although Sony Ericsson’s plans for the official gaming on the smartphone are likely to be a bit more streamlined and controlled.

It still shows confirmation that the PlayStation Phone’s processor and GPU are up to the job and that it should come as good news to the homebrew community which is probably itching to get its hands on the device. We’re expecting Sony Ericsson to make the smartphone’s official debut at MWC 2011 next month.
