Sabermetrics, the study and analysis of advanced baseball statistics, is not for everyone. It really does take a special kind of fan to devote time to this endlessly informative and often maddeningly difficult science to master.

Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Today, we’ll go over easier-to-grasp concepts called FIP, or Fielding Independent

Pitching. It’s designed to isolate just how effective a pitcher is and to take outside fielders out of the equation (so to speak). To further illustrate what we’re looking at, let’s check in with the folks at The Hardball Times, which has a glossary for such terminology:

Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number.

Hmm. Still not getting it? Well, we’ve got this incredibly elementary, accurate video that Bradley Woodrum from DRaysBay.com put together:

Genius. Low production values, but genius nevertheless. (And bonus points for the dragon.) Indeed, if every advanced baseball statistic was explained in such a way, we wouldn’t to have deal with people like Joe Morgan and their ongoing ignorance of statistics.

In other words, make more videos, Brad. (Please.)
