Today we saw the blogosphere explode when reports came out that Apple is looking into the possibilities of removing the home button from its touch devices. The reports say that Apple would replace the home buttons on the iPhone and iPad in favor of multi-touch gestures that would mimic the function of the home button. Too further entice interest in these rumors, its being said that if Apple were to implement this feature it would be in time for next-generation releases scheduled for later this year.
While we’re definitely intrigued by this idea, we’ve also come to realize that there could be some big issues if Apple were to actually implement this. The gesture need to perform this command would require the user to place 5 fingers spread out across the screen and then bringing them together at a single point -think the claw from the crane games you would find in arcades-. The first problem we could see with this method is if the user didn’t have the 5 fingers required to perform this function. Another problem is more of an annoyance, in that performing this multi-gesture would cause the user have to use 2 hands to input a command that with a home button on the device could be done by 1 finger. Too use this method would also mean repositioning your hold on the device every time you needed to use the home function while in landscape view. For right now we don’t believe that Apple would try to put this design on their products with being so close to shipping of the devices. What would be another method you see working after removing the home button or is the button the most efficient way to perform the home function?
