The famed countdown has once again returned this year, and no its not the ball drop at Times Square you see at New Year’s Eve. The App store download counter has found its way back onto the official Apple website where its actually counting up, not down (yes I know I said countdown but gimme a break, there’s not too many famous counters to reference). Apple is bringing it back to build excitement for the 10 billionth download milestone that the store is closing in on.
Whether you feel that hype surrounding the event is cheesy or justified, milestone itself is a reminder of the growth Apple’s App Store and the digital app world as whole has experienced. Apple is pretty excited about this accomplishment, so much so that the company is handing out a large bounty on an iTunes gift card to the person who downloads the 10 billionth app. The gift card is going to be loaded with a jackpot of $10,000 which would allow the winner to purchase almost every premium burp and fart apps that are currently available. It’s likely that the winner should also expect a phone call from Mr.Apple himself Steve Jobs. And even though publicity stunts or promotions of this caliber usually don’t receive the media attention the company was shooting for, the reason for the promotion itself is still nothing to scoff at. This time almost exactly one year ago, Apple was celebrating it’s 3 billionth download from the App Store and going even further back in time, we see that the store “only” (I’m using “only” very lightly here) 1.5 billion downloads for the entire first year of its existence. It doesn’t matter what field of business you’re in, if your sales triple your companies life time sales numbers in just one year, it’s more than enough cause for celebration, cheesy or not.
