Notion Ink fans can rejoice as news comes in that the Adam tablet has finally received the approval from the FCC that is required to be sold in the US according to CEO Rohan Shravan. The plan is that pre-orders will begin shipping as of January 19th. The pricing for the 10-inch Android powered slate will range from $375 for a Wi-Fi version with a standard screen and up to $550 for a 3G edition with a Pixel Qi screen. Not only is the device unique in that its coming from Indian but also its UI stands out from the pack. Even though its currently using Android 2.2, the Adam tablet is coming to us with Eden which promises to fix the issue of scaling the pre-3.0 OS to the large screen. The interface revolves around “leaves” that allow the user to have multiple apps working alongside each other even if its not optimized for tablets. Powering the US’s first non-Apple tablet of this size will be a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 with features including front and back cameras and 1080p capable HDMI output. The 3G versions will work with the AT&T network.
Shravan also made it clear that Android 3.0, Honeycomb, will take some time to implement but is definitely still part the plans. Eden’s UI had Honeycomb in mind when it was designed but the Google OS is still a “work in progress” which is bringing many of the things Notion Ink had previously added itself. The CEO noted that smooth visual transitions have been a weak point of Android and that many of the improvements are centered around addressing this issue. The Adam isn’t exactly expected to knock the iPad off its throne due to distribution limitations, but as the first Android optimized tablet to put up a fight before the Xoom from Motorola with Android 3.0 is released in February. Does the Adam interest you enough that you would consider purchasing it over an iPad? Check out the video below of the Adam UI in action.
