George Hotz (aka geohot) became known for being the first person to jailbreak the iPhone and since then he’s been busy working on the PS3. The modification of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) gave George protection from Apple when he released his jailbreak for the iDevice but the DMCA might not help him with the lawsuit Sony is pursuing against him. As the DMCA sits it currently only covers mobile phones and nothing else.
When George appeared on G4?s The Loop he stated his stance on the issue is why can you jailbreak one device and not another as long as you own it. He also made it very clear that he took extra steps to make sure that his jailbreak of the PS3 would not enable users to play pirated games. George said he is hoping that if he successfully defends his case and comes out victorious that the result would prompt a change to be made to the DMCA. Currently George is working on a couple security projects and doesn’t have any real plans on what he’ll look to jailbreak next. What chance do you think he has against Sony in the case? What, if any, changes do you think need to be made to the DMCA? Check out the video below for the full interview from G4.
