A recent report from a Japanese blog by the name of Macotakara states that according to their sources, Apple is toying with the idea of adding glass free 3D technology to the next generation of it’s iPod Touch. The iPod Touch would be a direct pocket-gaming competitor to Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS portable gaming console. This report comes after a multitude of 3D related patents that Apple has granted over the past few years. MacStories, discussing the report, wrote that Apple would be integrating the 3D technology “without any external peripheral or accessory.”
It seems that the 3D screens would be supplied by Sharp, who is currently in the process of developing small, glasses-free LCD screens that would essentially be used as the screen for the next generation iPod. Macotakara wrote that the company is currently in the process of preparing to manufacture the screens. At this point, everything is still a rumor – a move towards glass-free 3D technology does make relative sense for Apple, particularly for the iPod Touch, as it continues on the road to compete for pocket-gaming supremacy. The implementation of this technology would be considered a feat for Apple, but we suspect that the company will wait to make sure the technology is truly read for prime time before taking the jump.
What do you think of the whole idea? Do you think Apple will decide to use it? Let us know in the comments below!
