Whether she’s “rolling out an entire album on Twitter” or soliciting concert-goers’ e-mail addresses from the stage, Amanda Palmer has been seeking direct lines of communication with fans since The Dresden Dolls formed a decade ago.

“Fans are our friends, they are our community,” the art-rocker told Wired.com. “Twitter has completely changed my career.”

While The Dresden Dolls‘ music and worldview were inspired by punk rock’s DIY ethic, Palmer points out that today’s social networking allows for building communities at light speed when compared to the handcrafted zines and indie labels of yore.

Twitter also gives Palmer, who sings and plays multiple instruments in the punk cabaret duo, the perfect vehicle for sending love tweets to her cool husband, author Neil Gaiman. Get more of the self-described media master’s take on the power of social networking in the video interview above.
