Video Preview Of Mac OS X Lion With New AirDrop Feature
As rumored, Apple launched new MacBook Pro‘s earlier today with Sandy Bridge Quad core processors with Intel’s Turbo Boost 2.0, a hybrid Thunderbolt/mini Display port, FaceTime camera and more. Apple also surprised us by releasing the first developer preview version of Mac OS X Lion today, which was first demoed last October. Mac OS X Lion includes features inspired by iOS on the iPad like multitouch gestures, App Store, App home screens with iOS 4 folders, full screen apps, auto save, apps resume when launched. The first developer preview version also includes some new features such as a new version of Mail, Versions, AirDrop, all new FileVault and Mac OS X Lion Server. Check out the complete list of features posted on the preview page. A new version of Mail, with an elegant, widescreen layout inspired by the iPad; Conversations, which automatically groups related messages into one easy to read timeline; more powerful search; and support for Microsoft Exchange 2010; AirDrop, a remarkably simple way to copy files wirelessly from one Mac to another with no setup; Versions, which automatically saves successive versions of your document as you create it, and gives you an easy way to browse, edit and even revert to previous versions; Resume, which conveniently brings your apps back exactly how you left them when you restart your Mac or quit and relaunch an app; Auto Save, which automatically saves your documents as you work; The all new FileVault, that provides high performance full disk encryption for local and external drives, and the ability to wipe data from your Mac instantaneously; and Mac OS X Lion Server, which makes setting up a server easier than ever and adds support for managing Mac OS X Lion, iPhone®, iPad and iPod touch® devices. Out of the new features – AirDrop seems to be quite interesting. Here’s the description of the new AirDrop feature: With AirDrop in Mac OS X Lion, you can send files to anyone around you — wirelessly. AirDrop doesn’t require setup or special settings. Just click the AirDrop icon in the Finder sidebar, and your Mac automatically discovers other people nearby who are using AirDrop. You’ll even see contact photos for those who are already in your Address Book. To share a file, simply drag it to someone’s name. Once accepted, the file transfers directly to the person’s Downloads folder. When you’re done with AirDrop, close the Finder and your Mac is no longer visible to others. As you already know AirPrint is the wireless printing feature. It automatically finds printers on the local network and allows users to print to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software. While, AirPlay allows users to stream audio and video content from any iOS-based device to the new Apple TV. AirPlay is currently limited to only some of the pre-installed apps but iOS 4.3 will allow users to stream audio and video content from any iOS app. If you are not a registered Mac developer but still want to see some of the new features of OS X 10.7 Lion in action, check out the YouTube video’s of the new developer build running on what appears to be a MacBook Pro model released by folks over at RazorianFly. The two videos show new toys such as Launchpad as well as the new Finder. The iOS rubber-band affect is in full effect too, with lists in Finder acting just like they do in iOS devices. Also worth noting is how fluid the interface is already. Considering this is the first build to come out of Cupertino, it is impressive just how well the OS runs on the existing hardware.
