Samsung Considering Galaxy Tab Overhaul After Seeing iPad 2
The iPad 2 was only announced two days ago, but already it has the competition rethinking their devices. Samsung says it will have to make improvements to its upcoming tablets after seeing Apple unveil the iPad 2 this week, according to yonhapnews. Lee Don-joo, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, said that Apple has presented new challenges for the South Korean company with a thinner mobile gadget that is priced the same as its predecessor. Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Mobile World Congress just last month. The Honeycomb tablet was one of the most hyped devices of the entire event, although there were varying hands-on reports. It boasts some impressive specs and puts the iPad 2’s photo capabilities to shame, and is also sleeker than the XOOM. According to reports, most of the issues with the tablet seemed like bugs that would be worked out before the release, which still has yet to be announced. Now, it’s sounding like that day could be pushed back even further. Currently, the seven-inch Galaxy Tab is listed on AT&T’s Web site for $549. The iPad 2 starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi version and $629 for the 3G model. But pricing is cause for concern when Samsung releases a larger screen model. “The 10-inch (tablet) was to be priced higher than the 7-inch (tablet) but we will have to think that over,” said Lee. The iPad is 8.8-millimeters thick, significantly thinner than Samsung’s latest 10.9-millimeter tablet announced last month. “We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate,” Lee told Yonhap News Agency. “Apple made it very thin.” Samsung also notes it will have to reconsider pricing of its future tablets. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab was priced at almost $900; whereas, the iPad starts at $499 and tops out at $829. The competition should really help us consumers out by bringing us more features and more options so it is great news for us. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
