Geeks take note: This week’s episode of Breaking In will make dreams come true. Then it will break hearts.
Why? Its plot revolves around the show’s high-tech security agency protecting a copy of a sequel to The Goonies. And, back in reality where we all live, no Goonies sequel actually exists. Bummer.
Wednesday’s episode, titled “Take the Movie and Run,” takes place at a comic book convention, where Contra Security’s resident nerd Cash (played by Alphonso McAuley) becomes a suspect after the only copy of the film goes missing.
Both Comic-Con International and The Goonies are close to series co-creator Adam F. Goldberg’s heart.
“We tried to get Green Lantern and a bunch of movies that are [actually] coming out, but I think understandably the subject matter of a movie being stolen and going online was a little iffy for [the studios],” Goldberg said in a conference call with reporters.
“So I thought, ‘Well, what’s the one movie that I feel like should be made and it’s not in current active development?’ And that was Goonies 2 for me.”
The Comic-Con episode is just the beginning. Goldberg is already teasing a Tron theme for a future episode of the workplace comedy, which stars Christian Slater as wisecracking Contra Security chief “Oz” Osbourne.
Goldberg also promises to fill the season with internet meme in-jokes. All of which is to say, don’t be surprised if Breaking In becomes a sleeper geek hit.
Breaking In airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. EDT (8:30 p.m. CDT) on Fox.
