Hewlett-Packard’s Cupertino campus was shut down on Wednesday while local police searched for a suspect of a multiple homicide still on the run who shot and wounded one of the company’s employees. At least three of Apple’s Cupertino, Calif. campus office buildings were also locked down in the wake of the shooting, Wired.com has learned.

After leaving the scene of the shooting — the Hansen Permanente Quarry near Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino — the suspect fled to the nearby Hewlett-Packard campus, where an HP contract employee was injured by gunfire, HP spokesperson Michael Thacker confirmed to Wired.com. The suspect then stole the employee’s car, according to the L.A. Times. HP’s campus was subsequently shut down completely for the day.

Two Apple employees also confirmed that the company’s “Homestead, Ridgeview and Tantau” buildings were prohibited from allowing any Apple employees from exiting the building on Wednesday until the manhunt ceased.

“We’re on lockdown,” an Apple employee told Wired.com.

The lockdown does not seem to have affected Apple’s other campus buildings, according to the employees.

After news of the shooting broke, Wired.com placed several calls to Apple’s switchboard to inquire of the company’s campuswide status. Apple operators confirmed the news of the lockdown to Wired.com.

Police say at approximately 4:30 am PST on Wednesday, the suspect — 45-year-old Shareef Allman — opened fire during a morning meeting at the Hanson Permanente Quarry, where Mr. Allman was an employee. The shooting left two dead and six wounded, according to the Cupertino Sheriff’s Department. The police search is concentrated within an approximate five-mile radius from the location of the shooting, an area which includes Apple’s Tantau and Ridgeview buildings.

The HP contract employee is currently in good condition at a nearby hospital, according to HP spokesman Thacker.

Santa Clara police told The San Jose Mercury News that Allman is believed to be “contained” within the area of Tantau and Homestead.

All classes at multiple nearby elementary and high schools were cancelled, as well as a number of community centers.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
