The folks over at iFixIt have completed their teardown of Apple’s new iPad 2. The broad consensus in response to the tablet’s disembowelment is clear. There are definitely a few surprises found beneath the hood of the iPad 2. As reported by the iFixit team in their teardown and subsequent highlight video (which you can find below), the most attention-worthy discoveries of the teardown are largely limited to the dwindling sizes of iPad parts and components. As we all know, the iPad 2 is thinner and sleeker than its predecessor. The teardown shows that the new tablet’s glass screen is markedly thinner, in particular a development that similarly lends to the reduced weight of the refreshed tablet. With only one day removed from the device’s launch it is a bit too early to adequately assess whether the newer, thinner glass display will prove less durable than the first generation iPad’s display. In addition to pointing out that chunks of glue are used this time to keep much of the iPad 2 in place, iFixit confirms that the iPad 2 delivers 512 MB of RAM, a dual-core processor that appears to be from Samsung, and the tablet’s new battery (which is a 3.8V, 25 watt-hour unit) represents only a minimal improvement over the first iPad’s battery (which is 24.8 watt-hours).
