After an eight-year hiatus, Intercoastal Altercations, America’s longest-running and most anagrammatically-titled online puzzle hunt, opens a new chapter starting tomorrow.
An all-star team of puzzlemakers, including The Puzzling World of Winston Breen novelist Eric Berlin and P&A magazine publisher Foggy Brume, have revived a tradition started in the late-1980s in New York and Berkeley. Previous Altercations have featured a chase for a wild goose, an exploration of a quirky Fortune 500 company, and the recovery of a priceless emerald necklace from a thieving monk. This year’s adventure is terrifyingly titled Intercoastal Altercations V: A Pikachoose-Your-Own-Adventure.
The hunt itself takes place on Saturday, October 15, starting at 2 PM EST. However, players are registering now because daily lead-up puzzles start tomorrow, October 7. The FAQ notes that this is an especially online-friendly hunt, allowing teams to be composed of people in different parts of the world.
