First Set of Third Party Widgets Released For iOS 5
With iOS 5 having the ability to utilize widgets, there has been lots of buzz as to whether developers will be able to create custom widgets and market them for the iOS software. Whether or not Apple is restricting this capability from the stock iOS, the jailbreak community has already managed to step it up a notch. The first widget for Notifications Center, known as UISettings, is currently in alpha form and on Cydia via an alternate repo. The creator, qwertyoruiop (@qwertyyoruiop), released the tweak not even a day after the iPhone Dev Team released the RedSn0w tethered jailbreak for iOS 5. UISettings, in essence is similar to SBSettings but has a more interface flowing fashion that seems to work well with iOS 5. Due to the swipe gestures in iOS 5 it makes it difficult for SBSettings to be placed as an activator gesture. The features that UISettings currently has include: WiFi Bluetooth Location Airplane Brightness Volume Respring Safe Mode Power Off Reboot Another feature that qwertyoruiop incorporated is the ability to theme. The documentation on his site shows you how to theme UISettings: Theme UISettings. The developer also added some additional tweaks to his repo that help enhance UISettings functionality. The tweaks include: RSSWidget for iOS 5 – Adds an RSS Widget on the iOS 5 Notification Center WeeTwitter – Mobile Twitter in the iOS 5 Notification Center UISettings along with RSSWidget for iOS 5 and WeeTwitter are available for free off the following repo on Cydia: https://qwertyoruiop.com/beta Although these are only a few basic features as of right now, qwertyoruiop is planning on releasing an update very soon. You can follow him on Twitter for more information about his upcoming work with UISettings. Personally, UISettings is great and refreshing and gives the user a personal touch to Notifications Center, which is nice. It is similar to SBSettings but as mentioned previously, since the activator settings will conflict with normal functionality of iOS 5, SBSettings will be hard to implement, but UISettings offers the same functionality and much more as well. We look forward to see updates to enhance the utility of the widget in the future. Stay tuned for more on this topic by following us on Facebook, Twitter and/or by subscribing to our RSS Feed.
